GEORGETOWN: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali visited the former Chief Minister,
Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Hospital Pulau Pinang (HPP), here, yesterday.
Also joining the tour for 35 minutes was the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Berjaya Corporation Bhd, Tan Sri Vincent Tan.
Dr Mahathir said Chong Eu who often visited his old contacts when sick.
"He was a Chief Minister is good and we had a close relationship,and because the Treasury participated in the Barisan Nasional ," he said.

He said they were not allowed to approach the Chong Eu as the concerned hospital infections occurred.

Last week, former Chief Minister of Penang was admitted to the intensive care unit were partially due to a stroke.

Dr Lim, the chief minister of Penang and the second position he held for 21 years from May 1969 until October 1990.
At the time of administration, Dr Lim develop the Free Trade Zone, now known as the Free Industrial Zone (FIZ).

Penang landmark, which houses administrative Komtar state government and the Penang Bridge is the result of his planning.
Dr Lim was born in 1919 in Penang. He attended school at the Penang Free School, where he was the King's Scholar in 1937. He later obtained a degree in medical and surgery from the University of Edinburgh, in Scotland, in 1944.

In 1951, he was appointed to the Penang Local Council and in 1955, he was appointed a members of the Federal Legislature.

In the March 1958 party elections, he challenged Tun Tan Cheng Lock and won the presidency with a majority of 22 votes.

After the victory, he called an EGm to amend the Constitution consolidate the power of the Central Committee. This was met with strong resistance by Tun Tan Siew Sin and his supporters.
